What Customized Employment Is
Customized Employment is the service we use when a traditional job search isn’t the right fit — typically for individuals with significant disabilities who benefit from a more deliberate, individualized approach.
It starts with Discovery — a structured process of getting to know the person in their everyday life. We spend time with them at home, in the community, with people who know them well. We’re not testing or assessing in the traditional sense; we’re learning who they are, what they’re drawn to, and what conditions help them thrive.
From Discovery we build a Vocational Profile, then negotiate a job — often a customized role at a local employer — that draws on the person’s strengths while meeting a genuine business need.
How It Works
- Home visits and community time with the individual.
- Conversations with family, friends, and others who know them well.
- Observation in environments where the person is most themselves.
- A written Vocational Profile that reads like a portrait, not a checklist.
- Negotiated job development with employers — including customized job descriptions, carved roles, and resource ownership.
